U.S. Air Force awarded SFC Energy USD 1 million to qualify production ready portable 50 W fuel cell power generator “JENNY”

  • New product will match Air Force Operator's need for portable power with high energy density
  • Award proves value of SFC Energy’s technology and power solutions for defense and security applications and user confidence in SFC's field proven DMFC technology

Brunnthal/Munich, Germany, December 4, 2012 – The U.S. Air Force awarded SFC Energy Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of SFC Energy AG, technology and market leader for portable, mobile, and off-grid power generation and distribution, 1 million USD. In the framework of this award, SFC is to mature its portable 50 Watt fuel cell to production readiness. This Fuel Cell is based on SFC Energy's award winning DMFC fuel cell technology for defense and security applications.

SFC Energy has been cooperating with the U.S. Air Force in the development and production of portable power solutions since 2003. The Company's fuel cell power generator JENNY 600S, a portable 25 Watt fuel cell generator, has been successfully qualified and deployed in missions by several international military organizations since 2005. In 2008 two portable fuel cell models using SFC Energy technology had won 1st and 3rd prize in the U.S. Department of Defense's Wearable Power Competition.

The new portable 50 Watt JENNY fuel cell generator will build on SFC Energy's extensive technology expertise and many years of application experience in providing power to portable and mobile defense applications. SFC Energy will optimize the portable fuel cell to match the requirements of the Operator, significantly reduce weight carried and will be ruggedized for use in harsh military environments. SFC Energy will qualify in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force the performance of the new portable 50 Watt fuel cell generator.

'This award is another significant milestone for us', says Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy. 'It proves the attractiveness of our integrated portable and mobile power solutions for strategic defense & government applications, where the reliable availability of power is of utmost importance for the success of a mission. We are proud that this program will certify the portable fuel cell technology as ready for field operations with the U.S.
Air Force.'

To further support the introduction and commercialization of SFC’s fuel cell technology in the United States, SFC Energy has been operating a dedicated U.S. subsidiary, SFC Energy Inc., since 2008 that has established close product and application support, as well a US based fuel infrastructure for its fuel cells.
