SFC’s 250 Watt Fuel Cell Passes Development Phase

FORT HOOD, Texas/Brunnthal — April 18, 2008 — SFC Energy AG, a leading supplier of fuel cell products for mobile and off-grid power applications, today announced that its new 250-watt Alternate Power Source Fuel Cell has success-fully passed rigorous U.S. Army testing by the Army’s Operational Test Command (OTC) at Fort Hood, Texas. The OTC, which is part of the Army’s Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC), tests equipment, systems and technology in realistic operational situations to determine whether they meet mission requirements in a variety of environments over extended periods of time.

The 250-watt Alternate Power Source Fuel Cell (FC-250), based on SFC’s fully commercialized EFOY technology, supports these tests by providing a robust, reli-able, compact, and lightweight power source for OTC data-acquisition systems. The FC-250 is the most powerful fuel cell SFC has ever delivered. The innovative product has been ruggedized for the Army and is capable of withstanding high temperatures and accidental dropping.

The FC-250 is also a platform for further use in industrial applications. While batteries need to be replaced at least daily, the FC-250 provides 250 watts up to 100 hours autonomously with one 7.4 gallon (28 litre) cartridge, which can be easily replaced by one soldier. This will enable significant reduction in logistics costs. This development underscores SFC’s ability to efficiently supply increased power and capacity for mobile remote power solutions.

“Meeting the exacting requirements of the U.S. Army is a high honor for SFC and a further confirmation of our strong technology position in the defense market,” said Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC. “This success also highlights our ability to respond quickly and flexibly to opportunities, so we can create new markets and be the first to provide commercial products”.
The FC-250 system is a stand-alone, lightweight power supply made to perform in highly demanding Army test environments. It is designed to be easily carried by two persons, while providing sufficient power to operate the OTC data acquisition suite used to collect data during operational tests of advanced Army systems.

The recently completed first phase of the three-phase project included MIL-SPEC tests, product improvements and operational tests and will be followed by Low and Full-Rate Production Phases. Completion of phase one will be celebrated by a ribbon cutting ceremony April 18 at Fort Hood featuring Major General Roger A. Nadeau, ATEC’s commanding general; Col. Curtis D. Potts, OTC commander; Bob Hall, OTC technical director; Dr. Jens Mueller, CTO of SFC, and guests from sev-eral ATEC organizations.
