SFC receives commercial order for portable fuel cells

Brunnthal, February 11, 2008 – SFC Energy AG, market leader in fuel cell technologies for mobile and off-grid power applications, has again been awarded a commercial order for its portable fuel cells in a defense application. The order amounts to 350,000 Euro. Ordering customer is a Western-European defense organisation. The order builds on the successful use of SFC Energy AG products in international tests. The order comprises portable Jenny fuel cells and Power Manager units both by SFC. These systems will be used in an international peace-keeping mission.

Portable fuel cells by SFC are a compact power source carried on the body. They provide reliable, autonomous power anytime and anywhere so that soldiers will always have enough power to run their devices even in difficult terrain and in challenging environmental and weather conditions. In these situations the fuel cell’s advantages are an important asset: they are lightweight, silent and emission-free. The SFC fuel cell system reduces the load carried by the soldier by more than 80 percent compared to conventional lithium batteries. As a consequence, soldiers can reliably power their devices in longer missions with less battery weight. This increases their mobility and flexibility during the mission.

With the help of the SFC Power Manager almost any device used during the mission can be supplied with electricity by the fuel cell or any other available power source. Current and voltage are automatically adapted, ensuring that vitally important devices like radio and communication systems can be operated reliably and longer than with batteries. Thanks to integrated automatic cable recognition the SFC Power Manager directly adapts to the individual voltage requirements of the respective devices.

With this major order, SFC fuel cells have again demonstrated their significance for the autonomous power supply of soldiers in the field – one of the big challenges of modern defense organisations. “This order once more proves our competitive edge and the technical maturity of our fuel cells and power management products. It also shows that our successful international field and product tests are now leading to first commercial orders“, says Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy AG. „Thus, the extensive qualification programs our products undergo even in extreme conditions in the field continue to bear fruit“.
